BECAUSE Cancer diseases have started to become more common among children. Every year more than a million children in the world and approximately 1200 children in Turkey are under the risk of being afflicted by leukemia. On the other hand, WHO warns us: There will be a 60% increase in cancer diseases by 2020.

BECAUSE Recent advancements in the field of hematology have enabled us to acquire up to 91% complete recovery in the treatment of childhood leukemia. In other words, 9 out of 10 children with standard risk ALL return to their every day life. In order to acquire this rate in our country, it is obvious that sterile environments, specialized hospitals fully equipped with high tech instruments, an experienced health team and cancer centers providing psychological and social support is needed.

BECAUSE During the treatment of leukemia hygiene, nutrition and being bound to life are equally important as medication. Children should not think of hospitals where they will be treated for approximately three years as dreary castles seen in horror movies, nor should they liken their doctors and nurses who dram blood to vampires. An atmosphere that resembles an entertaining playschool and a warm home should be created in the hospital.

BECAUSE At birth a child cannot choose between poverty or wealth and between being healthy or ill. Nor can he/she choose the place where he/she can be treated. Whereas according to the Children’s Rights Agreement, every child should have the right to live and be treated under equal circumstances and state patronage.

BECAUSE The treatment of leukemia is extremely expensive. None of the families can afford the treatment expenses which add up to hundreds of thousands of YTL. Therefore, non profit foundation hospitals which provide complimentary treatment are needed.

BECAUSE Families who migrate to big cities such as Istanbul and Ankara for their child’s treatment, need modern centers where they can find a bed and a smiling face, rather than having to cope with city traffic.

BECAUSE Parents’ main focus point should be on keeping their child’s spirits high, so that he/she can recover rapidly. They should not have to circulate between hospitals to find blood. They should not have to wait in a queue for an approving signature or a medical certificate. Neither should they have to spend time in front of a pharmacy for medicine.

BECAUSE In Turkey bone marrow transplantation is extremely rare. Patients are sent abroad to other countries since a developed Bone Marrow Bank does not exist. Besides, especially children need to wait for months in order to receive a date for bone marrow transplantation and unfortunately, some pass away in the meantime.

With its hospital, hotel, school, houses, sports fields, workshops and shopping centers a complete city life will be led. Children will be able to host artists, sportspeople, statesmen they admire and their friends.

Children with leukemia will be able to invite their relatives, friends from sister schools and therefore share their experiences by way of contests and events.

They may take trips or even travel the world with the permission of their doctors.

There will be no noise pollution, nor air pollution. Starting from the entrance of the city, transportation will be conducted by foot or by small electrical cars. Moreover where possible, phaetons will become an important mean for transportation as well as a source of entertainment for children. At City for Children with Leukemia, all technological, communication and visual equipment which do not cause cancer will be used complimentarily.

Briefly, it will be a dreamlike life where laughter echoes, faces perpetually smile and butterflies fly over gardens of flowers.
